Sarah Nemtsov’s music is often characterised by the engagement with literature. She constantly deals with the threshold between concert and music theatre.
A swearing Lady Anne? And how! Sarah Nemtsov has written her great monologue from Richard III to suit the immensely expressive mezzo-soprano Tehila Nini Goldstein.
“Richard III” by William Shakespeare
England in the late 15th century. The Wars of the Roses between the houses of York and Lancaster are heading for their finale. Richard of the House of York is willing to kill to achieve his great goal – the throne of England. He has murdered King Henry VI and got rid of his son and heir to the throne.
Lady Anne parades through the streets of London with the dead king in an open coffin. Grieving for her father-in-law and husband, she curses Richard’s wickedness and godlessness as well as the woman he will one day marry and the children they will have together – not suspecting that he will succeed in seducing her immediately afterwards and that the curse will ultimately fall on her.
