Bernd Richard Deutsch is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary music. Born in Austria in 1977, he captivates audiences with powerful, sensual compositions that combine precision and imagination. His works are commissioned by leading orchestras and festivals – such as the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Cleveland Orchestra and Wien Modern – and are performed worldwide.
Deutsch loves structures that are alive: his music is thoughtful but never distant; virtuosic but always narrative. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Hindemith Prize. In his work Massenkristall (Mass Crystal), he explores the forces that shape individuals into a mass – inspired by Elias Canetti’s Masse und Macht (Crowds and Power). Deutsch translates this tension into sound: hypnotic, energetic, with a keen sense of the abysmal. His music reflects on us – and draws us right into the middle of it.
